In Memoriam Pope Francis

In Memoriam: Pope Francis

Rome, Vatican City, 21 April 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we join the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A spiritual leader of remarkable humility and compassion, Pope Francis served the Catholic Church and humanity with a heart rooted in mercy, inclusion, and peace.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was elected the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church in March 2013. Throughout his papacy, he remained a tireless advocate for the poor, the marginalized, and our shared responsibility to care for the environment. His vision helped renew the Church’s mission in the modern world and inspired millions across the globe.

Here at Steps from the Vatican Guesthouse, just meters away from Saint Peter’s Square, we have often heard the sound of his voice during the Sunday Angelus from the Papal window. Many of our guests have cherished memories of seeing and hearing him speak, even if just from afar.

As the Vatican and the world prepare to say farewell, we extend our deepest condolences to the Catholic faithful and all who were touched by Pope Francis’ message of love and simplicity. May he rest in peace.

For guests staying with us during this time, please be aware that there may be significant crowds, special events, and changes to public transportation around the Vatican area in the coming days. We will do our best to keep you informed.
